The Cleveland Cavaliers are not expected to make a serious run at Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo should the Bucks entertain trade offers, according to reporting by Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
League sources told Fischer and Stein that Cleveland’s front office views a pursuit of the two-time MVP as risky because of questions about his long-term plans. Antetokounmpo can reach free agency as early as the summer of 2027, and there is no indication he would commit to the Cavaliers beyond a short stay.
Rumors have floated that Cleveland could craft a package centered on 22-year-old forward Evan Mobley, but multiple outlets have reported the organization has little interest in such a move. President of basketball operations Koby Altman underscored that stance in his season-ending press conference, calling Mobley “part of our future” and a “franchise-caliber player.”
Fischer and Stein added that team officials view Mobley as a cornerstone who can bridge the franchise’s future beyond Donovan Mitchell’s prime years. The front office also remains mindful of the difficulties that followed LeBron James’s departures in 2010 and 2018, fueling reluctance to trade a young foundational piece unless the return is deemed a long-term certainty.
While Cleveland continues to explore ways to improve the roster, sources said the club is not eager to jeopardize its future assets at this time.
