NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league remains focused on improving officiating while acknowledging that player embellishment has become ingrained in today’s game. Speaking Wednesday on The Pat McAfee Show, Silver responded to mounting criticism about foul calls and flopping, an issue amplified during the current postseason.
“There’s a difference between selling a call, exaggeration, and a true flop, which is when you’re actually fooling the referees,” Silver told host Pat McAfee. He added that some level of embellishment is now routinely coached: “If they’re not fooling the referees, it’s like, OK, the players are taught to sell calls these days.”
The debate has intensified around Oklahoma City Thunder guard and two-time NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose frequent trips to the free-throw line have fueled fan complaints. Silver acknowledged that officiating can still improve, saying, “Can officiating get better? Of course, we’re always working on that. Can officials get fooled occasionally? We’re always at that as well. The officiating is incredible.”
Silver’s comments come as the league continues to navigate pressure from teams and fans seeking greater consistency in foul interpretations, particularly during high-stakes playoff games.
