San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama exited Paycom Center on Tuesday night without addressing reporters after the team’s 127-114 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.
The 22-year-old skipped his mandatory postgame availability after recording his lowest scoring output of the series. Wembanyama hit just 4 of 15 shots, missed all five three-point attempts and finished with 20 points and six rebounds. The Spurs were outscored by eight points during his 33 minutes on the floor, marking his first negative net rating of the conference finals and only the third of the 2026 playoffs.
Wembanyama was voted the NBA’s most media-friendly player this season by the Professional Basketball Writers Association. His decision to bypass reporters now leaves the league office to determine whether he will be fined for violating media access rules.
Tuesday’s loss put San Antonio behind 3-2 in the best-of-seven series. Head coach Mitch Johnson said the Spurs need a stronger performance from their star when the teams meet Thursday at Frost Bank Center.
“He’s got to take more than 15 shots,” Johnson told reporters. “Even with the 12 free throws, he’s going to have to score more than 20 points for sure.”
Johnson attributed Wembanyama’s quiet night to a mix of Oklahoma City’s defensive focus and the Spurs’ execution. “OKC did a good job. We’ve got to do a better job,” he said.
Guard Stephon Castle added that Wembanyama’s aggressiveness is crucial. “They send so many bodies toward him. … He’s our best player. We need him to be aggressive. I feel like him being aggressive opens up shots for other guys,” Castle said.
Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday in San Antonio. A Spurs win would force a decisive Game 7 back in Oklahoma City.
