Los Angeles — ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said the Los Angeles Lakers must contemplate a scenario in which LeBron James leaves the franchise, adding that the Cleveland Cavaliers could become a viable destination if a sign-and-trade materializes.
During a recent appearance on ESPN, the veteran NBA reporter floated the idea that Cleveland might pursue James for a final homecoming. Windhorst noted that such a move would likely require the Cavaliers to discuss including one of their starting big men — Jarrett Allen or Evan Mobley — in a deal designed to give the Lakers immediate front-court help.
“If you’re willing to touch the idea of Jarrett Allen, if you’re willing to touch the idea of Evan Mobley … that pathway could lead you to LeBron James,” Windhorst said, clarifying that he was speaking hypothetically and that no trade talks are known to be underway.
Cleveland’s Front-Court Pieces
Mobley, 22, is coming off a season in which he averaged 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 blocks, reinforcing his status as one of the league’s premier young two-way bigs. Allen, 28, has long been viewed by league insiders as the more attainable trade piece should Cleveland opt to reconfigure its roster.
Status of LeBron James
James, 41, has not publicly indicated plans to leave Los Angeles, retire, or seek another championship run elsewhere. The Lakers are still expected to try to re-sign the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, but Windhorst’s comments underscore the uncertainty surrounding his offseason decision.
For now, the notion of a James return to Cleveland remains speculative. Until the four-time MVP commits to a direction, the Cavaliers are likely to remain part of the rumor mill.
