The New York Knicks, fresh off a sweep of Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals, find themselves one series away from their first championship since 1973. A sequence of deliberate front-office decisions paved the way, according to multiple reports.

Key roster decisions

An analysis by The Athletic’s Fred Katz highlights several pivotal moments: trading Kristaps Porziņģis to create salary flexibility, opting against surrendering assets for guard Jalen Brunson before signing him in 2022 free agency, and later acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart through separate deals.

Peter Sblendorio of the New York Daily News notes that the four-year, $104 million contract given to Brunson in 2022 has become one of the franchise’s most valuable investments.

Brunson’s rare opportunity

ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill points out that if New York secures the championship, Brunson would become only the third player 6-foot-2 or shorter to serve as the clear focal point of a title team, joining Isiah Thomas and Stephen Curry.

Mike Brown’s impact

Head coach Mike Brown was not the Knicks’ first choice to succeed Tom Thibodeau, but his in-game adjustments have drawn praise, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reports. Fired four times since 2010, Brown is now four victories from joining Red Holzman as the only coaches to guide the Knicks to a championship.

“I truly felt these Knicks were an NBA Finals team,” Brown said. “Some jobs you take, you say, ‘OK, we’ll get better and we have to make the playoffs right now.’ But this one, I felt we legitimately had a chance if we could help them figure it out and the players could stay together during the process.”

Hart trade pays off

New York sent Cam Reddish, Svi Mykhailiuk, Ryan Arcidiacono and a first-round pick to Portland for Josh Hart at the 2025 trade deadline. Columnist Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post calls the move a major reason the Knicks captured the East.

Draft preparations

The club hosted six prospects on Tuesday: Arkansas guard Meleek Thomas (ESPN No. 25), Baylor wing Tounde Yessoufou (No. 34), USF forward Izaiyah Nelson, BYU center Keba Keita, Missouri swingman Mark Mitchell and Akron forward Amani Lyles, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. Virginia center Ugonna Onyenso (No. 43) will visit this weekend, Bondy adds. The Knicks own picks 24, 31 and 55 in next month’s draft.
