The Dallas Mavericks continue to express confidence in building around guard Kyrie Irving and rookie Cooper Flagg, yet league sources say the front office has started exploring what a potential Irving trade could yield.

Publicly, team officials have praised the idea of an Irving-Flagg duo. Newly hired general manager Mike Schmitz recently described the pairing as “a match made in heaven,” and team president Masai Ujiri added, “There is only one Kyrie walking around in the world.”

Behind the scenes, however, Dallas is believed to be surveying interest from other clubs. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that several contenders are monitoring Irving’s status, prompting the Mavericks to weigh their options, according to Hoops Wire.

Draft Picks a Key Factor

Sports Illustrated recently floated a hypothetical deal that would send Irving to the Atlanta Hawks for young players and multiple future first-round picks. The exact names involved were not specified, but draft capital is considered the primary attraction for Dallas.

The Mavericks accelerated their timeline by drafting Flagg, leaving the franchise with a limited supply of future first-round selections. Acquiring additional picks could help replenish assets in a Western Conference that now features up-and-coming powerhouses such as the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Moving Irving would almost certainly weaken Dallas in the short term. Still, with several teams expressing interest and the Mavericks studying long-range roster construction, discussions about a trade are expected to continue as the offseason progresses.
