The offseason has already delivered several key story lines across the NBA, from roster building in Portland to draft preparations in Miami and coaching support in Minnesota.
Trail Blazers
Forward Deni Avdija, 25, has positioned himself as a franchise pillar after a breakout campaign with the Trail Blazers. League scouts noted that Avdija evolved into an All-Star–caliber point forward despite Portland’s limited floor spacing. Speaking with reporters, he outlined his next objectives: “I need to learn how to drive both ways, be a better defender, a better leader.”
While Avdija’s ceiling—whether as a top option or a high-end No. 2—remains under discussion, his growth offers stability amid organizational change. The shake-up continued with the dismissal of longtime scout and WNBA legend Tina Thompson, according to The Rose Garden Report. Thompson, reportedly close to Damian Lillard, was among the latest employees let go under new owner Tom Dundon.
Heat
The Miami Heat hold the No. 13 pick in next month’s draft and are preparing for multiple scenarios. Vice president of basketball operations Adam Simon said the front office is “zooming in” on prospects likely to be available in that range. Miami has a productive history there, having selected Tyler Herro 13th in 2019 and Bam Adebayo 14th in 2017. The club is also open to trading the pick, though league rules prevent an official deal until draft night because of existing first-round obligations.
Timberwolves
After a second-round playoff exit, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly publicly praised head coach Chris Finch. “He was masterful, I think, in the Denver series. We’re not here without Finchy,” Connelly told reporters, adding that internal belief in Finch’s long-term leadership remains strong.
The Blazers’ roster decisions, the Heat’s draft strategy, and the Timberwolves’ endorsement of Finch set the stage for a busy summer around the league.
