Los Angeles Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said the organization is working closely with Luka Doncic as it prepares to reshape the roster this summer.

Speaking during his end-of-season news conference, Pelinka called the discussions with the All-NBA guard an “ongoing, collaborative process,” noting that he and head coach JJ (JJ Redick) remain in “constant communication” with Doncic and his representatives.

“We plan to meet again Friday or Saturday before he flies home to spend time with his daughters,” Pelinka said. “His basketball IQ is immense, and his insight into other players and how he wants to play makes the conversations really productive.”

Cap Room and Draft Assets Fuel Off-Season Options

The Lakers enter the off-season with salary-cap flexibility and multiple draft picks, positioning the front office to pursue upgrades through free agency, trades and the NBA Draft. Pelinka emphasized that all potential moves are being evaluated with Doncic at the center of the decision-making process.

Secondary Creator, Rim-Running Center Among Identified Needs

Team officials are prioritizing a long-term secondary playmaker—Austin Reaves is viewed internally as the leading candidate after showing strong chemistry with Doncic this season—along with a rim-running center and versatile two-way wings who can bolster perimeter defense and floor spacing.

Doncic’s MVP-Level Campaign

Doncic, 27, led the NBA in scoring during his first full year in Los Angeles and finished fourth in the 2025-26 MVP voting, reinforcing the franchise’s commitment to building around him.

The Lakers finished the season in the Western Conference semifinals, falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder on May 7 at Paycom Center.
