Kansas freshman guard Darryn Peterson, a projected high pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, cited LeBron James’s basketball intelligence as the single skill he would transplant into a custom-built superstar.
During an April 6, 2026 appearance on an ESPN segment that asked prospects to assemble an ideal player from current NBA stars, Peterson assigned specific talents to five categories:
• Jumper: Stephen Curry
• Handles: Kyrie Irving
• Defense: Kawhi Leonard
• Athleticism: Anthony Edwards
• Basketball IQ: LeBron James
Peterson praised James’s renowned floor awareness, a trait that has drawn league-wide admiration throughout the 39-year-old forward’s 23rd NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. James is often credited for anticipating opponents’ sets, guiding teammates to precise spots and, according to Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt, separating himself from peers through meticulous film study.
Although James showed modest signs of physical decline this year, he remained one of the league’s most effective players by leveraging that cerebral edge. The four-time MVP has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to defer scoring duties to teammates such as Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves while still impacting victories.
If James opts to return for the 2026-27 campaign, Peterson could face—or possibly team with—the future Hall of Famer soon after hearing his name called early on draft night.
