Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said the franchise will lean on “optionality” to reshape the roster around All-NBA guard Luka Doncic during what he described as a pivotal summer.

“Having optionality to roster plan and roster build, there are several ways to do it,” Pelinka told reporters at his end-of-season press conference. “There’s the Draft, there’s trades—where some teams are going to be getting off good players in this harsh system—and then there’s free agency. We do have the optionality to look to all those different avenues to get better.”

Cap space and draft capital in play

The Lakers enter the offseason with significant salary-cap space, a first-round pick in the upcoming draft and additional selections available for trades. Pelinka said every move will be “retrofitted around Luka and the things he needs,” underscoring the organization’s commitment to building a contender around its 26-year-old star.

Key free-agent decisions

Los Angeles must also decide on several in-house free agents, headlined by guard Austin Reaves and forward LeBron James. Reaves is eligible for a substantial raise, while James holds a player option for next season. Retaining both would reduce the club’s spending flexibility, but Pelinka expressed confidence the front office can still add talent.

“There are 15 roster spots,” he said. “If you mention three players, that leaves you 12 others to build around. We have enough tools in our tool chest to build out a team, for sure.”

Roster needs

Pelinka identified improved athleticism on the wing, stronger perimeter defense and an athletic, rim-running center—an archetype Doncic historically thrives alongside—as top priorities.

Other pending free agents

The Lakers also face decisions on Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard and Marcus Smart. According to Pelinka, the team would be interested in bringing Smart back if the veteran guard declines his player option and reaches free agency.

The Lakers now enter an offseason that could determine how quickly the franchise returns to championship contention, with management prepared to use the draft, the trade market and free agency to meet its goals.
