Dennis Smith Jr. Set for Workout With Knicks

Free-agent guard Dennis Smith Jr. will participate in a workout with the New York Knicks later this week, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. The 27-year-old is attempting to rejoin the NBA after spending last season overseas.
Selected ninth overall in the 2017 draft, Smith has appeared in seven NBA campaigns, including three partial seasons with New York from 2019 to 2021 following the Kristaps Porziņģis trade with Dallas. He owns career averages of 9.7 points, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 40.7% from the field, 29.8% from three and 67.4% from the foul line.
The athletic guard evolved into a high-end perimeter defender during his most recent NBA stops with Charlotte and Brooklyn. His last league action came in 2023-24, when he saw the floor in 56 games for the Nets. Smith spent part of last year with Real Madrid, appearing in four contests and logging 2.8 points in 8.8 minutes per game.
New York currently has 17 of its 21 available training-camp roster slots filled. The club is expected to explore moving one of its younger players to keep two of Landry Shamet, Malcolm Brogdon and Garrison Mathews, though any transaction would likely occur after camp. Second-round pick Mohamed Diawara is also projected to receive a standard contract.
