RIGA, Latvia — Giannis Antetokounmpo delivered 30 points and 17 rebounds on Sunday, guiding Greece to a 92-89 victory over Finland in the EuroBasket bronze-medal game and securing the nation’s first medal at the tournament since 2009.
“We did it. This is probably one of the biggest accomplishments that I’ve ever accomplished as an athlete,” the Milwaukee Bucks star said after the final horn. “I know I’ve won an NBA championship, but there’s no feeling like representing your national team and representing 12 million people that breathe and live this national team.”
The result puts Greece on the EuroBasket podium for the sixth time, adding a third bronze to a résumé that also includes two golds and one silver.
Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen posted 19 points and 10 rebounds for Finland, which trimmed a 17-point deficit to one possession in the closing seconds. Elias Valtonen had a chance to tie the game with three free throws with 5 seconds left but missed the third attempt. Antetokounmpo grabbed the rebound and hit two foul shots to close out the win.
Greece never trailed, though its 11-point cushion with fewer than two minutes remaining nearly vanished as Finland mounted its late push.
Both teams were coming off semifinal losses: Greece fell to Turkey, while Germany defeated Finland. Turkey and Germany met later Sunday for the championship.
