The NBA has wrapped up its review of the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to sideline Giannis Antetokounmpo and will not impose any discipline on the franchise, according to sources familiar with the findings.
League officials opened the inquiry early last month after contradictory public comments from Antetokounmpo and the Bucks about the star forward’s readiness to return. The two-time MVP hyperextended his left knee on March 15 and did not play again during the regular season.
Antetokounmpo repeatedly told reporters he felt healthy enough to rejoin the lineup but was awaiting medical clearance from the team. Milwaukee, in conversations with the league, indicated it believed the player was reluctant to suit up.
The Bucks informed investigators that Antetokounmpo declined to participate in scheduled 3-on-3 scrimmages—an element of the organization’s return-to-play protocol. Antetokounmpo countered that he had already taken part in such workouts and was ready for game action regardless.
“From my understanding, coming back to play … I had to play 3-on-3 to be able to be available to play,” Antetokounmpo said during his end-of-season news conference. “I did that multiple times. I’ve never in my life denied participation of practice.”
With the investigation closed, attention now shifts to Antetokounmpo’s offseason outlook. Sources told ESPN the Bucks are open to trade discussions involving the 31-year-old, leaving his future in Milwaukee uncertain.
