Los Angeles, May 12, 2026 — LeBron James said Monday night that he will meet with his family in the coming weeks before determining whether he will return for a 24th NBA season or enter free agency elsewhere.

The 41-year-old forward spoke after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, falling 115-110 in Game 4 at Crypto.com Arena. James logged 40 minutes, producing 24 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, but missed a driving floater with 20.3 seconds remaining that could have put the Lakers ahead.

“With my future, I don’t know, honestly,” James said. “It’s still fresh from losing. I plan to recalibrate with my family and talk with them.”

The four-time champion emphasized that any decision will hinge on whether he can “stay in love with the process” of extensive game-day and practice preparation. He described arriving 5½ hours before tipoff and reporting three hours early for practices as standards he must still embrace to keep playing.

Unrestricted free agent for the first time in L.A.

James just completed his eighth season in Los Angeles — his longest stretch with one franchise — and for the first time as a Laker enters an offseason without a contract or player option. He was the club’s highest-paid player in 2025-26 at $52.6 million and averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in the regular season. Those numbers rose to 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds during the playoffs.

With Luka Doncic sidelined by a left hamstring strain and Austin Reaves out for four games with an oblique injury, James helped the Lakers defeat the Houston Rockets in six games in the first round. He later shifted back into a leading role after spending part of the season as a third option behind Doncic and Reaves, during which Los Angeles went 16-2 from late February through March.

Roster decisions ahead

James is one of several Lakers heading to free agency, joining Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Jaxson Hayes and Luke Kennard. Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton hold player options. Doncic, who said he was “not close” to returning after his April 2 injury, declined to say whether he would recruit James and Reaves to stay.

Doncic also announced he will skip Slovenia’s national team obligations this summer as he pursues joint custody of his daughters. “First of all, I want to spend time with my daughters,” he said. “Second, get the work in and come back ready for the season.”

Family considerations

James’ eldest son, Lakers guard Bronny James, said he has “no clue” what his father will decide. The elder James has often noted that sharing an NBA court with his son is the highlight of his career, yet he acknowledged Monday that chasing championships remains a driving force.

The Lakers’ season ended one win short of the Western Conference finals, leaving James to reflect on the commitment required for another run. “I left everything I could on the floor,” he said. “I’m not looking at my year as a disappointment.”
