Warriors keep Kerr with two-year contract after coach renews commitment

Steve Kerr will remain on the Golden State bench for at least two more seasons after agreeing to a new deal that materialized once he rediscovered his enthusiasm for coaching.
Kerr, 60, stepped away for a week following last month’s play-in defeat to Phoenix and then met with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. Those talks, coupled with a subsequent golf trip, convinced him to continue in the role he first assumed in 2014.
Negotiations extended beyond Kerr’s personal decision. Team leaders and the coach discussed potential adjustments in playing style, staff assignments and roster strategy after a 37-45 campaign. The Warriors already expect to open next season without Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, both recovering from serious injuries.
Curry’s preference, contract outlook
Sources said Stephen Curry favored keeping Kerr but did not pressure management. Had a coaching search been required, Curry likely would have participated. Retaining Kerr is also viewed internally as a step toward smoothing extension talks with the 36-year-old guard, who becomes eligible in August and has one year left on his current agreement.
Green’s player option
Draymond Green’s status is less clear. The 34-year-old forward holds a $27.6 million player option for 2026-27, and the front office does not plan to shop him, believing he remains an elite defender and influential leader. A longer extension at a reduced annual salary is possible only if it frees enough cap space for a significant roster upgrade.
Lottery implications
Tuesday’s draft lottery may shape the organization’s summer plans. Slotted 11th with a 9.4 percent chance of jumping into the top four, Golden State could use a high pick as trade capital for stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kawhi Leonard, or opt to inject youth into an aging lineup.
