LeBron James Backs Austin Reaves After Difficult Game 1 Against Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped Game 1 of their Western Conference second-round series to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 114-96, on Sunday night. While LeBron James delivered a standout performance, guard Austin Reaves finished with only eight points on 3-for-16 shooting, drawing immediate criticism.
James addressed Reaves’ struggles during his postgame media session. “He was out a month,” the forward said, referring to Reaves’ Grade 2 left oblique strain that sidelined him late in the regular season. “We know he’s going to make shots and make plays, but that’s tough when you were out a month toward the end of the season. His presence alone helps us, no matter what.”
Because the injury occurred just before the playoffs—and with superstar Luka Dončić still unavailable—the Lakers had little choice but to insert Reaves directly into a primary scoring and playmaking role. The challenge has been compounded by consecutive matchups against two top-tier defenses: first the Houston Rockets in the opening round, and now a Thunder unit featuring multiple All-Defense candidates on the perimeter and center Chet Holmgren protecting the rim.
Reaves did not offer excuses for his performance, emphasizing that he must limit turnovers and improve his efficiency. “Nobody cares about my injuries,” he told reporters. “I have to be better.”
Los Angeles will look for an immediate response from the third-year guard when the best-of-seven series resumes with Game 2 on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City.
