The Los Angeles Lakers opened their playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a loss on May 6, 2026, falling behind 1–0 despite stretches of solid defense.

Throughout Game 1, Los Angeles managed to keep Oklahoma City from gaining sustained momentum, frequently forcing contested looks and limiting easy drives. However, timely baskets by the Thunder in the closing minutes erased the Lakers’ earlier work and decided the outcome.

Lakers players and coaches pointed to missed assignments and lapses in execution as the difference, noting that even small breakdowns can be costly in postseason play. While the defensive effort was largely effective, it was not enough to secure a road win to begin the best-of-seven matchup.

Game 2 is scheduled for later this week, with Los Angeles looking to tighten its coverage and even the series.
