The Cleveland Cavaliers opened the second-round series with a 111-101 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, undone by 20 turnovers that turned into 31 Detroit points at Little Caesars Arena.

Guard James Harden paced Cleveland with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but also accounted for seven of the giveaways. “We spot them 16 points, we give them 31 points off our turnovers and transition. That’s the game,” Harden told reporters.

Despite trailing nearly the entire night, the Cavaliers pulled even with 5:28 remaining. Detroit immediately answered with three consecutive dunks from Jalen Duren, restoring control and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Slow start, familiar road woes

Detroit led 35-19 after one quarter, continuing a pattern of Cleveland falling behind early in road playoff games. The Pistons were consistently first to loose balls, stronger on the glass and more physical in scrums—a theme Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged, saying, “I think at the end of the day they were the more aggressive team.”

Individual performances

  • Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points, ending his run of nine straight 30-point efforts in series openers. “They took care of home court Game 1,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to find a way to steal Game 2.”
  • Evan Mobley delivered 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists. “It’s a lot of things that we can control,” Mobley noted. “We have to fix those things and we have to start off better.”
  • Jarrett Allen, coming off a dominant Game 7 against Toronto, finished with just two points and three rebounds.
  • Max Strus supplied 19 points off the bench, keeping Cleveland within range during extended stretches.

Reserve guard Sam Merrill exited in the first half with hamstring tightness. Keon Ellis filled in capably, and his role could grow if Merrill’s status remains uncertain for Thursday’s Game 2.

The Cavaliers dropped all three road contests in the opening round at Toronto and now face another deficit away from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. They will try to level the best-of-seven series when the teams meet again in Detroit.
