Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James says his team must execute every detail flawlessly if it hopes to challenge the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the upcoming Western Conference Semifinals.
Speaking on the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast, James acknowledged the Lakers’ long-shot status entering the series. “We’re undermanned and we’re the underdog, and we understand that,” the 41-year-old veteran said. “We cannot shortcut the details in the game plan.”
Thunder Present Major Hurdle
Oklahoma City enters the series as the NBA’s defending champion and home to the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player. James called the Thunder “one of the most historic basketball teams offensively and defensively” and predicted their star will likely secure a second consecutive MVP award.
The Lakers’ challenge is compounded by the continued absence of Luka Dončić, who remains sidelined with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Without Dončić, Los Angeles will again rely heavily on James, now in his 23rd season.
Keys to Competing
James outlined a clear blueprint for staying competitive: limit turnovers and avoid giving Oklahoma City easy transition opportunities. “We know how great they are when it comes to pick-sixes and how handsy they are,” he said, noting the Thunder’s speed and athleticism. “If we can control the controllables, we can give ourselves a chance, and that’s all you can ask for in the postseason.”
The Lakers used a similar approach in the first round, defeating the Houston Rockets in six games despite being favored by few analysts. James led that series in scoring and minutes played.
Still the Go-To Option at 41
At an age when most players have long retired, James remains the Lakers’ primary offensive weapon. He admitted his 33-year-old self would have been “surprised” to learn he would still be leading a playoff push in 2026.
The Western Conference Semifinals open later this week in Oklahoma City.
