The Orlando Magic dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday, ending his five-year tenure that included three straight playoff appearances but no series victories.

Mosley, 47, compiled a 189-221 record after taking over in 2021. He guided Orlando out of a rebuild, won two Southeast Division crowns and produced the franchise’s first run of three consecutive winning seasons since 2007-12. The club, however, fell in the opening round each year, most recently losing a seven-game series to the Detroit Pistons after holding a 3-1 lead.

“We’re grateful to Jamahl for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” team president Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective.” Weltman, who signed a contract extension shortly before Orlando reached the NBA Cup final four, will head the search for Mosley’s successor.

Regular-season progress and playoff frustrations

The Magic won 47 games in 2023-24, their highest total since 2011, and fielded one of the NBA’s stingiest defenses—ranking third that season and second the following year before slipping to 11th in 2025-26. Offensive production lagged behind; Orlando finished in the bottom 10 in scoring efficiency each of the past four seasons.

Expectations rose last summer when the front office sent four first-round picks to Memphis for guard Desmond Bane. Instead, the Magic spent much of the season fighting to avoid the Eastern Conference play-in round and exited in the first round once again.

Injuries to key players

Orlando’s core battled injuries throughout Mosley’s stint. Reigning Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero appeared in only 46 games in 2024-25. Guard Jalen Suggs managed 35 and 57 games the past two seasons, respectively. Forward Franz Wagner missed 22 games in 2024-25 and just 34 contests this regular season before a right calf strain in Game 4 against Detroit sidelined him for the series’ final three games, during which Orlando squandered both its series lead and a 24-point advantage in Game 6.

Coaching background

Mosley joined the Magic after assistant coaching stints with the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks. Orlando hired him in July 2021 to succeed Steve Clifford and oversee a full rebuild.

The franchise now turns to its second coaching search in six years as it attempts to capitalize on a young roster and heightened expectations.
