Ayton Embraces Redick’s Defensive Challenge as Lakers Eliminate Rockets
May 1, 2026 — With the Los Angeles Lakers seeking to close out the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the first round, head coach JJ Redick scrapped his double-team strategy and asked center Deandre Ayton to defend Alperen Sengun single-handedly. Ayton responded and the Lakers secured a decisive win at Toyota Center.
“Coach wanted me to guard Sengun one-on-one,” Ayton said after the game. “That let everyone else stay home on their man. They were hurting us with back-door cuts and Sengun’s passing, so I took the challenge.”
The shift paid off. Sengun finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds but registered only one assist—down from the eight he tallied earlier in the series. Houston managed just 78 points, and Los Angeles advanced.
Redick’s adjustment marked a clear departure from earlier matchups, when Sengun’s playmaking out of double teams repeatedly freed up shooters and cutters. Confident in Ayton’s size and mobility, the Lakers opted to stay at home on Houston’s perimeter threats.
Ayton credited his teammates’ trust for fueling his effort on the glass and in contesting shots. The former No. 1 overall pick contributed key rebounds down the stretch as Los Angeles pulled away.
Veteran guard Marcus Smart praised Ayton’s impact in the locker room, highlighting the center’s rebounding and rim protection throughout the physical series.
The Lakers move on to the Western Conference semifinals after the 4-2 series victory.
