Madrid — Veteran forward Trey Lyles is heading to Europe after agreeing to a one-year contract with Real Madrid, the Spanish club announced Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Canadian spent the past three and a half seasons with the Sacramento Kings and has logged 10 NBA campaigns overall. Selected 12th in the 2015 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz—one pick ahead of his Kentucky teammate Devin Booker—Lyles has also played for the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Detroit Pistons.
Last season with Sacramento, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Earlier this summer he represented Canada at the Paris Olympics, helping the national team reach the quarterfinals.
Real Madrid, a perennial contender in both the Spanish domestic league and the EuroLeague, once served as the launching pad for Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić. Lyles becomes the latest NBA veteran to bolster the club’s frontcourt as it chases more European hardware.
