The Los Angeles Lakers protected home court on April 21, 2026, edging the Houston Rockets 101-94 at Crypto.com Arena to claim a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference first-round matchup.

Los Angeles had not led a postseason series 2-0 since the 2020 NBA Finals. The best-of-seven set now shifts to Toyota Center for Games 3 and 4.

Before tipoff, Luka Doncic accepted his March Western Conference Player of the Month trophy and the league’s scoring champion award. Once play began, guard Marcus Smart jump-started the Lakers by scoring 12 of the team’s first 15 points while hounding Kevin Durant on defense. Smart, LeBron James and Luke Kennard combined for 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting in the opening period, helping the Lakers to a 33-26 advantage despite surrendering seven offensive rebounds.

James drilled consecutive three-pointers to open the second quarter, but Houston responded with a 12-0 burst to trim the deficit. Los Angeles carried a narrow 54-51 edge into halftime.

The third quarter turned ragged as the clubs traded fouls and turnovers. Houston’s Jake LaRavia picked up his fifth foul, and Durant—back after missing time with a right knee bruise—collected his fourth, sending both to the bench. The Lakers regained control late in the period and entered the fourth up seven.

Los Angeles forced Houston into the penalty with 8:43 remaining yet failed to fully exploit the free-throw line. The Rockets kept the margin close but struggled to convert open looks. Repeated double-teams on James created openings for teammates: Rui Hachimura buried a mid-range jumper for a 91-85 cushion with 3:41 left, Smart knocked down a corner three on the next possession, and James sealed the outcome with a driving dunk in the final minute.
