LOS ANGELES — LeBron James called the prospect of sharing NBA postseason minutes with his son, rookie guard Bronny James, “the best thing that’s ever happened to me in my career” after the Los Angeles Lakers’ practice on Thursday.

The 20-time All-Star praised Bronny’s progress since injuries to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves opened rotation time in recent weeks. Bronny, 21, has come off the bench and could be called upon when the Lakers open their first-round series against the Houston Rockets this weekend.

“The fact that he’s put himself in position to get his number called for a postseason game is pretty remarkable, pretty cool given the circumstances he’s been through the last couple of years,” LeBron said. “He earned it, he deserves it and he’ll be ready.”

Bronny suffered cardiac arrest in the summer of 2023, shortly before his freshman season at USC. Selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, he spent most of his rookie campaign with the G League’s South Bay Lakers. This season, the 6-foot-4 guard has shown improved strength, on-ball confidence and disruptive perimeter defense.

LeBron and Bronny became the NBA’s first father-son duo to appear together in a game earlier this year. While it remains unclear how many minutes Bronny will receive against Houston, LeBron said his son “belongs in the NBA” and has the locker room’s confidence.
