The Los Angeles Lakers have turned guard Nick Smith Jr. from a two-way player into a member of the standard 15-man roster, signing him to a two-year contract as the regular season winds down.
To create the opening, the club waived Kobe Bufkin, clearing a spot that makes Smith eligible for the upcoming postseason. NBA rules prohibit two-way players from appearing in playoff games.
“Definitely a good opportunity for me to be a part of the playoffs,” Smith said after the Lakers’ 131-107 victory over the Utah Jazz at Crypto.com Arena on Dec. 28, 2025. “It’s my first time being part of the playoffs … I’m very excited.”
The 2023 first-round pick made an early-season impression while injuries sidelined key scorers. With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves still recovering, head coach JJ Redick has leaned on Smith and fellow rookie Bronny James to provide offense off the bench.
Upon learning of the promotion, the 20-year-old immediately called his parents. “We were very excited. It’s been a long year for me, and I’m just ready for the opportunity,” he said.
Smith credited veterans such as Marcus Smart and Reaves for steady guidance throughout the season. “It’s a fun time for me. It’s the playoffs, it’s my first time, so I’m excited. I’m ready to go,” he added.
The Lakers open their first-round series against the Houston Rockets without confirmed return dates for Doncic or Reaves, increasing the likelihood that Smith will see meaningful minutes.
