The Los Angeles Lakers announced that LeBron James (left foot injury management), Marcus Smart (right ankle contusion) and Luke Kennard (left finger injury management) will be in uniform for Friday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns. Center Jaxson Hayes (left foot injury management) has been ruled out.
Kennard had been listed as questionable but was upgraded to available after pre-game warm-ups. Smart is set to return after missing nine consecutive contests, while James continues to shoulder the primary playmaking duties with Luka Doncic (Grade 2 left hamstring strain) and Austin Reaves (Grade 2 left oblique injury) still sidelined.
The matchup carries significant playoff implications. A Lakers victory combined with a Houston Rockets loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves would secure home-court advantage in the first round by locking up the No. 4 seed. Los Angeles also remains in contention for the No. 3 spot if it wins its final two games and the Denver Nuggets drop one of theirs.
With the postseason approaching, the Lakers are exercising caution on the injury front. Hayes will sit, and Phoenix is expected to rest key players, including Devin Booker, after clinching its own seeding.
Los Angeles made an additional roster move by waiving guard Kobe Bufkin, creating an opening that can be filled by an external signing or by converting a two-way player before the playoffs begin.
