Slow-Paced Clubs Post Best Numbers as NBA’s Fastest Struggle

The season-long push for up-tempo basketball is not paying off for many NBA offenses, according to data reviewed by ESPN’s Zach Kram.

Slower teams own the efficiency edge

None of the league’s 10 fastest teams rank among the top 10 in offensive efficiency, while several high-tempo clubs—such as the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards—sit near the bottom of the scoring charts. By contrast, methodical offenses in Boston, Denver and New York operate at slower speeds and rank near the top.

On average, the 10 slowest teams are outscoring the 10 quickest by 3.1 points per 100 possessions, the widest gap recorded in nearly 30 years of available data.

Why speed is backfiring

Kram links the trend to Goodhart’s Law: when teams chase quick shots simply because analytics label them efficient, shot quality can suffer. Bulls head coach Billy Donovan noted that an early attempt “is not automatically a good one if it’s rushed or contested.”

Fast clubs also tend to lag in other offensive pillars—turnovers, offensive rebounds and free-throw rate. Chicago, for instance, generates favorable looks but ranks near the league’s basement in those supplemental metrics.

Star power favors a slower tempo

Personnel remains a factor. Many up-tempo rosters lack elite scorers, while deliberate teams often feature marquee names. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said that when a team has “high-level players,” slowing down to run sets through them is logical. A significant share of this season’s All-Stars—among them Nikola Jokić, LeBron James and Jalen Brunson—come from slower environments.

Postseason implications

The playoffs historically grind possessions to a halt, and with several contenders already embracing patience, this spring could skew even more half-court oriented. That approach may benefit defense-first clubs, including top seeds such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons.

Still, nearly every coach continues to preach pace. The numbers suggest only a handful truly profit from it.
