The San Antonio Spurs announced Tuesday that rookie center Victor Wembanyama and guard Stephon Castle will not play Wednesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wembanyama sustained a left rib contusion during the first half of Monday’s 115-102 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers. He finished that game with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks in 15 minutes 40 seconds.
Castle recorded a triple-double in the same contest—17 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds—but experienced right knee soreness afterward. The club had initially listed him as doubtful before ruling him out.
Because NBA rules allow two appearances of 15 to 19:59 minutes to count toward the league’s 65-game minimum for award eligibility, Monday’s outing qualified as an official game for Wembanyama. The MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate still needs one additional game in which he logs at least 20 minutes to remain eligible for postseason honors.
San Antonio did not announce a timeline for either player’s return.
