Doc Rivers Hints at Possible Retirement, Citing Desire to Spend More Time With Grandchildren

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers indicated Tuesday that his time on an NBA sideline may be drawing to a close as he prepares for this summer’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction.

Speaking to reporters before the Bucks faced the Brooklyn Nets, the 64-year-old was asked how much longer he intends to coach. Rivers declined to set a timeline but pointed to family obligations. “I won’t answer that, but I have grandkids that I want to see,” he said, according to Michael Scotto. “I’ll let you figure it out from there. I have seven grandkids now, all eight and under, and it kills me every time I miss Grandparents Day at their schools. It’s probably time to see them more.”

Rivers reiterated, “I’ll let you figure out the rest,” leaving open the possibility that he could step away from coaching in the near future.

The veteran coach has led NBA teams since 1999, with previous stops in Orlando, Boston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia before arriving in Milwaukee this season. His tenure with the Bucks has been marked by inconsistency on the court and growing tension off it.

Milwaukee is on pace to miss the postseason, and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has been sidelined since mid-March amid differing views between the star and the organization about his availability. The NBA is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding Antetokounmpo’s absence.

Additional strain surfaced in March when, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Rivers told players during a meeting to “look at my résumé and Google me,” comments that reportedly did not sit well inside the locker room.

The rocky stretch has raised questions about potential changes for the Bucks beyond the roster—and whether Rivers will be part of the organization’s future plans.
