Pistons Upgrade Cade Cunningham to Doubtful for Road Matchup in Orlando

The Detroit Pistons have moved Cade Cunningham from “out” to “doubtful” for Monday night’s game against the Orlando Magic, indicating the franchise cornerstone could return before the regular season ends.

Reporter Hunter Patterson of The Athletic noted the status change on the NBA’s official injury report. Detroit had announced last Thursday that Cunningham would be reevaluated in one week, but the revised designation suggests his recovery is progressing ahead of schedule.

Collapsed Lung Sidelined Star Guard

Cunningham, 24, has not played since March 17, when he sustained a left lung pneumothorax — commonly referred to as a collapsed lung — while diving for a loose ball against the Washington Wizards. He logged only five minutes in that contest, his 61st appearance of the season.

The injury halted any chance of postseason award consideration. NBA rules require players to meet a 65-game minimum, leaving Cunningham five games short. Detroit has just four regular-season games remaining, making him ineligible even if he appears in every one.

Detroit Thrives Without Its Leader

Despite Cunningham’s absence, the Pistons have secured the Eastern Conference’s top seed and compiled an 8-2 record since the mishap, including the victory over Washington on March 17.

For the season, Cunningham is averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds.

Stewart Also Upgraded

Forward Isaiah Stewart, sidelined since March 13 with a left calf strain, was likewise upgraded to doubtful for Monday’s game. The reserve big man is viewed as an important rotational piece heading into the playoffs.

While neither player is expected to suit up in Orlando, Detroit anticipates having both back in uniform before the regular-season finale on Sunday.
