SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs newcomer Dylan Harper underwent surgery on Friday to repair a partially torn collateral ligament in his left thumb, the team announced.

The injury occurred during a preseason workout on Wednesday. By addressing the issue immediately, medical staff believe the 19-year-old guard could still be cleared for the Spurs’ regular-season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 22.

Harper, selected No. 2 overall in June’s draft, averaged 16.0 points across two appearances for San Antonio at the Las Vegas Summer League. During his lone college season at Rutgers, he posted 19.4 points per game before declaring for the draft.

The 6-foot-5 rookie is expected to join the past two NBA Rookies of the Year—Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle—in head coach Gregg Popovich’s rotation this season.

The Spurs said Harper’s progress will be updated “as appropriate.”
