The Golden State Warriors are being discussed inside the league as a realistic landing spot for LeBron James when the 39-year-old forward reaches free agency this summer, according to ESPN reporters Tim Bontemps and Dave McMenamin.
Historic ties fuel speculation
James and Stephen Curry dominated the NBA landscape from 2015 to 2018 with four consecutive Finals meetings between the Cavaliers and Warriors. Their relationship grew during the 2024 Olympic cycle, where both played for head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr recently acknowledged the bond but stopped short of endorsing a move.
“I don’t have an investment in it, other than I know how good he is for the NBA,” Kerr said. “So whenever he retires, we’re going to miss him.”
James also maintains a close friendship with Warriors forward Draymond Green. Wing Jimmy Butler, currently recovering from a torn ACL, is on the roster as well, adding another familiar face.
Fit on the court remains uncertain
An Eastern Conference scout told ESPN, “I don’t know how good they’d be, but it would be a fun way to go through his last year.” While other teams may provide cleaner basketball fits, the potential pairing of James and Curry would create one of the league’s most prominent storylines.
Other destinations in play
The Los Angeles Lakers are widely viewed as the most natural option to retain James, while the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets have also been linked to varying degrees.
No timetable has been set for James’ decision, leaving the Warriors among several franchises monitoring the situation as the 2024 offseason approaches.
