Milwaukee may be approaching a franchise-altering offseason. Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the Bucks and forward Giannis Antetokounmpo might part ways once the season ends, signaling a potential breakup between the two-time MVP and the organization he led to the 2021 NBA championship.
According to Amick, friction grew over the club’s handling of Antetokounmpo’s recent knee injury. The 31-year-old star reportedly believes he is ready to return, but the team has continued to keep him out of action. League sources told Amick the decision could be aimed at protecting Antetokounmpo’s health ahead of a possible trade or improving draft positioning—neither of which matches the player’s wishes to play immediately.
The uncertainty arrives as Milwaukee faces a crucial contract deadline. Antetokounmpo becomes eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on Oct. 1. Co-owner Wes Edens recently told ESPN the team’s stance is straightforward: if the extension is not signed, the Bucks will explore a trade.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report added a personal consideration, noting Antetokounmpo’s preference for an East Coast market, which would shorten travel time to his native Greece. Should Milwaukee shop the superstar, multiple franchises are expected to inquire, including the Heat, Knicks, 76ers, Lakers, Warriors, Rockets and Timberwolves.
Milwaukee’s recent playoff record has also fueled speculation. The Bucks have been eliminated in the opening round three consecutive seasons and have won only one postseason series since capturing the 2021 title. Despite those struggles, Antetokounmpo’s résumé remains elite: two league MVP awards, one Finals MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year honor and 10 All-Star selections. His career averages stand at 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
Whether the Bucks commit to a new super-max deal or pursue a blockbuster trade, Milwaukee’s direction—and Antetokounmpo’s future—will likely be decided well before training camp.
