Wembanyama touts defensive impact in MVP conversation; James embraces new role; Udoka fumes after Rockets fall in Chicago

San Antonio, Los Angeles and Houston generated distinct storylines Monday as Victor Wembanyama made an MVP pitch, LeBron James settled into a revamped offensive hierarchy and Rockets coach Ime Udoka questioned officiating after a loss in Chicago.

Spurs: Wembanyama lays out MVP case

Following a locker-room exchange with teammate Keldon Johnson, Spurs rookie center Victor Wembanyama argued that his defensive influence should carry greater weight in the Most Valuable Player race, The Athletic’s Jared Weiss reported.

“Defense is 50 percent of the game and that is undervalued so far in the MVP race,” Wembanyama said. “I believe I’m the most impactful player defensively in the league.”

The 20-year-old cited three main points: his defensive impact, San Antonio’s near sweep of Oklahoma City and the idea that offensive value extends beyond scoring. Tracking data, he noted, places him with Nikola Jokić among the league’s most effective pick-and-roll finishers.

Through 56 games, Wembanyama is averaging 24.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks in 29.3 minutes. San Antonio posts a +16.6 net rating and a 103.5 defensive rating when he is on the floor, compared with a –0.1 net rating and 113.7 defensive mark without him.

Several voters told Weiss they would evaluate Wembanyama’s candidacy if the Spurs (54-18) pass the Thunder (57-15) for the NBA’s best record. “There should be a debate,” Wembanyama added. “I’ll try to make sure that by the end of the season, there’s no debate.”

Lakers: James thrives as No. 3 option

The Lakers’ nine-game winning streak ended Monday in Detroit, yet LeBron James continues to excel in a reduced scoring role, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic. Operating alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, James has effectively become what Amick labeled “the NBA’s best third option.”

The shift has prompted speculation that the four-time MVP could extend his stay in Los Angeles beyond the 2025-26 season, a contrast to preseason chatter that linked him to possible returns to Cleveland or a move to Golden State.

Rockets: Udoka ejected, blasts “soft” calls

Houston head coach Ime Udoka was tossed late in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 132-124 defeat in Chicago and later criticized several rulings, the Houston Chronicle’s Varun Shankar reported.

Udoka objected to a flagrant foul on Amen Thompson and technical fouls given to Thompson and Kevin Durant. “Flagrant was soft as hell, that’s nothing. And the techs were soft, too,” he said. “Not about to complain about a soft crew, so it is what it is.”

The coach’s larger frustration centered on Houston’s start. The Rockets yielded 41 first-quarter points and fell behind by 20 against a Bulls club that entered the night with one of the league’s lowest offensive ratings since the All-Star break.

“Poor start, disrespected the game,” Udoka said. “You look at the records, you look at who you’re playing against and don’t come out prepared and let them be comfortable, gain confidence.”
