The Brooklyn Nets will enter the coming season with additional financial flexibility after guard Cam Thomas signed his one-year qualifying offer, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Thomas, 23, accepted the offer worth just under $6 million, cutting his previous cap hold of approximately $12 million in half. The move frees about $6 million in space for Brooklyn’s front office.

Before Thomas opted for the qualifying offer, the Nets had proposed several longer arrangements, including a two-year contract in the $14-15 million range annually with a team option, and a one-year deal starting at $9.5 million that could have reached $11 million through incentives.

Choosing the qualifying offer gives Thomas a virtual no-trade clause for the upcoming season and positions him for unrestricted free agency in July 2026, when league projections indicate more than 10 teams could have cap room.

The third-year guard averaged 24.0 points and 3.8 assists last season but appeared in only 25 games because of a hamstring strain. Questions about his defensive impact and shooting consistency tempered interest on the restricted market despite Brooklyn’s unique spending power this summer.

For the Nets, the agreement keeps the payroll clean beyond 2025-26. Brooklyn has already re-signed Day’Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams to short-term contracts and has avoided long-term commitments during its roster reset.

Thomas is one of the final restricted free agents still unresolved as training camp approaches, joining Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga and Quentin Grimes on that list.
