Kansas head coach Bill Self said he has not decided whether he will return next season after the Jayhawks were upset 67–65 by St. John’s in Sunday’s NCAA tournament second round.
The 63-year-old coach explained that any decision will hinge on his health. “I’ll get back and get with family and visit and see what’s going on,” Self told reporters, per ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti. “I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well.”
Self has been hospitalized several times in recent years for undisclosed health issues. He emphasized that his uncertainty is unrelated to the program or his passion for coaching.
Kansas has failed to advance past the tournament’s second round in each of the last four seasons. “The first year we were a 1-seed, and I had serious health issues and didn’t finish the season,” Self said. “The last two years—including this year—have been inconsistent and not as good, so obviously it’s disappointing.”
Self added that further conversations with family members will determine his next steps once he returns home.
