Detroit’s sizable rotation is about to shoulder a heavier workload. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has spread minutes across 11 players this season, each averaging at least 16.8 per game, but that depth will be critical with guard Cade Cunningham (collapsed lung) and forward Isaiah Stewart (calf strain) sidelined.
“Nine is usually a good playoff number, but we’ve had trouble trimming it below 12 because so many guys have helped us win,” Bickerstaff told reporters earlier this month. He specifically mentioned Paul Reed, Marcus Sasser and rookie Daniss Jenkins as reserves who have maximized their chances. Kevin Huerter has also shuffled in and out of the lineup, and all four are expected to log regular minutes while Cunningham and Stewart heal.
Medical outlook for Cunningham
The Pistons ruled Cunningham out for at least two weeks after confirming the collapsed lung. Pulmonologist Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos of Johns Hopkins explained to the Detroit Free Press that even after the lung reinflates, full tissue healing typically requires additional weeks, noting athletes often feel ready before the injury is truly secure.
Playoff implications
Detroit sits 3.5 games ahead of Boston atop the Eastern Conference. In an Athletic roundtable, writers Hunter Patterson, Jay King and James L. Edwards III predicted the Pistons would hold the No. 1 seed through the final 14 games. Cunningham’s availability heading into the first round was labeled a pivotal factor, with several dangerous teams currently positioned near the bottom of the conference bracket.
Areas to address down the stretch
Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press highlighted three focal points for the club: improving perimeter accuracy, balancing offense and defense, and stabilizing ball-handling without Cunningham. Jenkins, Sasser, Huerter, Ausar Thompson and Caris LeVert are expected to manage additional playmaking duties.
Detroit’s playoff rotation remains fluid, and performances over the next two weeks could influence who earns minutes when the postseason begins.
