The Milwaukee Bucks and franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo are reportedly on different sides of a proposed plan to shut the forward down for the remainder of the season.
According to Eric Nehm of The Athletic, the organization prefers Antetokounmpo sit out the final weeks to focus on fully recovering from a knee hyperextension and bone bruise. The two-time MVP has appeared in just 36 games, while the Bucks hold a 28-40 record with slim postseason hopes.
ESPN’s Shams Charania and Nehm report that Antetokounmpo is pushing to return as soon as team medical staff clears him. Multiple meetings have taken place in recent days, but no resolution has been reached.
Milwaukee’s front office is weighing long-term considerations—protecting Antetokounmpo’s health, improving lottery odds and resetting the roster for next season—against the star’s competitive desire to play. The organization also faces an extension decision with the 29-year-old in October, making player satisfaction a significant factor.
For now, the Bucks and Antetokounmpo share a common goal of long-term health but remain split on whether the best route is immediate rest or an on-court return before season’s end.
