The Minnesota Timberwolves have ruled out guard Anthony Edwards after an MRI on his right knee revealed inflammation, the team announced Tuesday.

Edwards did not play in Tuesday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns because of soreness in the same knee. According to the Timberwolves, he will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks. No definitive timetable for his return has been established.

The earliest projection suggests Edwards could miss several upcoming contests, including scheduled meetings with the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics.

The 22-year-old is in the midst of a career year, averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 49.8% from the field and 40.4% from three-point range. He has appeared in 58 games this season, though an early exit from one game means it will not count toward the NBA’s 65-game minimum for postseason awards.

Minnesota entered Tuesday’s action at 41-27, sixth in the Western Conference — a half-game behind fourth place and two games ahead of seventh. The tight standings leave little margin for error as the Timberwolves try to avoid the play-in tournament.
