Philadelphia, PA — Second-year guard Jared McCain said Tuesday that his rehabilitation from a lateral meniscus tear remains on track, and he plans to be a full participant when the Philadelphia 76ers open training camp this fall.
“My plan, for sure, is to participate,” McCain told reporters during the team’s arena-naming event. “I’m on pace, and I’m doing great.”
The 22-year-old’s rookie season ended after 23 games, but he still averaged 15.3 points while shooting 46.0 percent from the field, 38.3 percent from three and 87.5 percent at the line, finishing seventh in Rookie of the Year voting. Philadelphia begins the regular season on Oct. 22 in Boston.
Pelicans Sign Garrison Brooks
New Orleans, LA — The New Orleans Pelicans have signed forward Garrison Brooks to what is expected to be an Exhibit 10 contract, the club announced. The 26-year-old went undrafted in 2022 and has since played in the G League, South Korea and Lithuania.
Brooks averaged 7.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in last season’s EuroCup competition and recorded several double-doubles with Westchester during the 2022-23 G League campaign. If he does not earn a roster spot with the Pelicans, he can be waived and receive a bonus by joining their G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron.
Giannis Held Out for Greece
Athens, Greece — Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo missed Greece’s EuroBasket victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina due to knee soreness, according to head coach Vassilis Spanoulis. Spanoulis said he expects the two-time NBA MVP to return Thursday against Spain, a matchup that could eliminate the Spaniards before the round of 16.
Spain’s roster features Memphis Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama and veteran Juancho Hernangómez, while Greece relies heavily on Antetokounmpo to sustain its medal aspirations.
