Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic believes the team has found a rhythm in the pick-and-roll with newcomer Deandre Ayton. Speaking after the club’s latest stretch of games, the guard said the two are “in a very good spot,” crediting Ayton for exploiting mismatches late in contests.
“In that third and fourth quarter, they wanted to blitz a little bit, so he saw the small guy and he was just playing bully ball down there,” Doncic said. “Then they went switch a couple times. I think he’s been doing an amazing job.”
Ayton, acquired in the offseason, opened the year with strong offensive numbers and early chemistry alongside Austin Reaves. Mid-season, however, the 7-footer’s production dipped, and he appeared disengaged on both ends of the floor. The center has responded with back-to-back double-doubles against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls, signaling a possible return to form.
The Lakers have long sought a reliable pick-and-roll partner for Doncic. While Ayton can finish lobs, he often prefers short rolls and mid-range looks—an adjustment from the typical modern-center profile. Injuries delayed on-court continuity, but Los Angeles has fielded a healthier roster in recent weeks, giving the duo extended time to refine their collaboration.
Ayton acknowledged earlier frustrations over limited touches, even likening his role to that of Clint Capela. After his recent performances, he said he has matched the team’s energy and focus, a critical development as the Lakers navigate a crowded Western Conference playoff race.
Head coach Darvin Ham and the front office expect Ayton to stay engaged on both ends, believing his presence can unlock additional offensive options and lift the club’s ceiling. For now, the All-Star guard and the former No. 1 overall pick appear to be trending in the right direction.
