The Los Angeles Lakers collected their second consecutive victory over a Western Conference contender on March 10, outscoring the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-106 at Crypto.com Arena.
Center Deandre Ayton powered the effort, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds while repeatedly disrupting shots around the rim. Although he did not register a block, his presence anchored a defense that held Minnesota to 37.2 percent shooting after halftime.
Head coach JJ Redick lauded Ayton’s two-way impact, noting that the 25-year-old was the lone efficient scorer during a cold first half and the key to the club’s improved perimeter containment. Redick said the Lakers limited open looks by sticking to their coverages, pointing out that Julius Randle managed only 14 points on 11 attempts and Anthony Edwards went 2-for-15 from the field.
Los Angeles trailed for much of the opening two quarters while shooting below 40 percent, but still posted an expected offensive rating of 128, according to Redick. The Lakers erupted for a 153 rating in the second half, fueled by better ball movement and transition opportunities created by stops.
Redick added that a performance like Wednesday’s should boost Ayton’s confidence and reinforce trust within the roster, especially after a stretch of uneven play earlier this season. “He’s won us a lot of games,” the coach said, emphasizing the center’s growing consistency.
The Lakers have pieced together their recent run without LeBron James, who has missed three straight contests with an injury. Redick credited improved communication and adherence to defensive principles for the club’s success in the superstar’s absence.
Los Angeles improved to 38-25 with the win, while Minnesota fell to 41-23.
