LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers have listed forward LeBron James as questionable for Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves because of a right hip contusion and left foot arthritis.
James has missed the past two contests — wins over the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks — after appearing in 26 of the previous 27 games. When the 21-year veteran sits, Los Angeles owns a 9-2 record this season, a stretch in which both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were available.
Tuesday’s meeting at Crypto.com Arena carries playoff implications. Minnesota enters third in the Western Conference, one game ahead of the fifth-place Lakers. Los Angeles won the first two matchups with the Timberwolves during the opening week of the season, but the clubs have not faced each other since.
The franchises also met in last year’s first round, where Minnesota eliminated Los Angeles in five games. The Timberwolves’ frontline of Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle and Naz Reid, along with defensive specialist Jaden McDaniels and leading scorer Anthony Edwards, poses a physical challenge that could make James’ presence valuable.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised his team’s defensive effort in Sunday’s 99-92 victory over New York, noting the group’s ability to hold one of the league’s top offenses below 100 points despite offensive lulls.
The Lakers did not announce when a final decision on James’ status will be made.
