Nicaraguan forward Norchad Omier, 24, is expected to join the Cleveland Cavaliers in training camp after a strong showing at NBA Summer League, according to league sources.

Omier is slated to arrive on an Exhibit 10 contract, a nonguaranteed deal that allows Cleveland to convert the agreement into a two-way contract or assign him to its G League affiliate while providing a bonus. The invitation marks the latest chapter in what the player calls an “improbable journey.”

“A few years ago, I never would’ve imagined I’d be here,” Omier told FIBA Basketball. “It’s been a long journey. I always think back to when I was a kid, playing in my neighborhood back home.”

That neighborhood is in Nicaragua, where Omier has become a household name. He averaged 15.3 points and 10.9 rebounds on 57 percent shooting during a college career that included stops at Arkansas State, Miami and Baylor. Earlier this week he earned a spot on the All-FIBA AmeriCup second team during a tournament hosted in his home country, calling the honor a proud moment for Nicaragua.

Omier credits his rise to faith and family support. “Some people doubted me, but my family never did,” he said. “Dream big, work hard, trust in God, and amazing things can happen.”

The Cavaliers will open camp later this month, and Omier’s performance there will determine whether his NBA dream extends into the regular season.
