Prominent basketball figures Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers have added their names to a public letter asserting that political intervention in higher education is putting the future of college athletics at risk.

The statement, released Wednesday, 4 March 2026, appears on the website of Stand For Campus Freedom. It argues that government actions—from funding cuts and censorship to the deployment of federal officers on campuses—are eroding the independence universities need to sustain the unifying spirit of college sports.

“College sports unite us as a nation, drawing out team spirit and shared values of fair play,” the coaches wrote. “Protecting university independence safeguards this proud tradition.”

In addition to Kerr and Rivers, the letter is signed by former Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, former Notre Dame women’s coach Muffet McGraw, ex-Michigan coach John Beilein, Harvard coach and former Duke standout Tommy Amaker, longtime St. Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli, Yale men’s coach James Jones, and Judith Sweet, the first woman elected president of the NCAA.

The group contends that political pressure “threatens the independence of our colleges and universities” and undermines the “one team” mentality coaches try to build. They call on fans and school supporters to urge elected officials to respect academic freedom and allow campuses to operate without partisan coercion.

Stand For Campus Freedom describes itself as a nonpartisan project dedicated to holding universities accountable to their ideals, resisting political coercion, and strengthening America’s global leadership.

The letter concludes: “When students are afraid to speak their minds, they cannot give their all. When campuses are polarized, it’s hard to maintain the ‘one team’ spirit we instill in the locker room.”
