Report: Kings not pursuing Russell Westbrook buyout; Lonzo Ball and D’Angelo Russell still in limbo

Sacramento, CA — Russell Westbrook’s stint with the Sacramento Kings appears set to continue, with no traction toward a contract buyout, according to ClutchPoints reporter Brett Siegel.

Team sources told Siegel that the veteran guard has accepted his role, earned the locker room’s respect and provided leadership for the Kings’ young core. While Westbrook would consider joining a playoff contender if one called, there is no indication any postseason hopeful is currently pursuing him. League executives also question whether a significant market would materialize if the Kings waived him. A return to Sacramento next season is viewed as a realistic outcome.

Lonzo Ball remains unsigned

Lonzo Ball is still without a team after being waived by Utah earlier this season. Both the Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets showed preliminary interest, Siegel reported, but medical concerns about Ball’s knee stalled discussions. Ball appeared in 35 games for Cleveland before the Cavaliers released him, and league personnel remain wary of his health. If an NBA roster spot does not emerge late in the season, overseas opportunities could come into play, according to Siegel.

D’Angelo Russell’s status unchanged in Washington

The Washington Wizards have yet to waive D’Angelo Russell, and Siegel noted that no “meaningful” interest has surfaced elsewhere. The guard recently switched jersey numbers, a subtle sign he may finish the year in the nation’s capital. Russell holds a player option worth nearly $6 million for 2024-25. Barring an unexpected call from a playoff team, his situation is expected to remain quiet.
