Dallas Mavericks forward Khris Middleton is weighing whether to remain in Dallas or negotiate a buyout before Sunday’s deadline that keeps waived players eligible for the postseason with a new team, he told reporter Marc Stein.
League sources said the Denver Nuggets are among several clubs ready to pursue the 34-year-old should he reach free agency. Middleton emphasized his appreciation for the reception he has received in Dallas, and the Mavericks have left the decision entirely to him and his representatives.
The Nuggets’ interest was confirmed by Bennett Durando of The Denver Post, who added that Denver had also tracked forward Kyle Anderson before Anderson chose the Minnesota Timberwolves following his buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies. Denver continues to seek additional wing size and secondary playmaking.
Middleton has appeared in 39 games since arriving from the Los Angeles Lakers in the Anthony Davis trade. He is averaging 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 24.2 minutes, shooting 44.1 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from three and 85.1 percent at the foul line.
If he is waived, Middleton cannot sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors or New York Knicks because those teams are above the second tax apron and barred from adding players earning more than this season’s $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception. Middleton’s expiring salary is $33.3 million. A buyout would also cost him his Bird rights, reducing his flexibility in free agency this summer.
The deadline for a resolution is Sunday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
