Indiana Pacers forward Obi Toppin has been upgraded to questionable for Thursday’s home matchup with the Charlotte Hornets, moving the sixth-year veteran a step closer to his first appearance since late October.
Toppin, who turns 28 next Wednesday, played only three games this season before suffering a right foot injury on Oct. 26 in Minnesota. Doctors inserted a screw into the fifth metatarsal after a partial stress fracture, and the Pacers initially ruled him out for a minimum of three months.
Indiana’s roster has been hit hard by injuries, contributing to a 15-44 record after last spring’s run to Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Despite the team’s position in the standings, the Pacers plan to bring Toppin back as soon as he is medically cleared.
Being listed as questionable does not guarantee he will dress on Thursday. If Toppin sits out against Charlotte, his next opportunity would come Sunday when Indiana hosts the Memphis Grizzlies.
Last season, Toppin was a key rotation piece for the Eastern Conference champions, appearing in 79 games and posting career highs with 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest while shooting .529 from the field, .365 from three and .781 at the line. He saw action in all 23 postseason games, averaging 9.4 points and 3.8 boards in 19.1 minutes off the bench.
