Germany captain Dennis Schroder was the target of racist abuse during his team’s 107-88 victory over Lithuania at EuroBasket on Saturday in Tampere, Finland.

The German Basketball Association said arena security identified two spectators who allegedly made monkey noises at the 31-year-old guard as he walked toward the locker room. Both individuals were removed from the building.

“You can insult me, but monkey noises are something I don’t respect or accept. Racism has no place in this sport,” Schroder said after the game.

Interim head coach Alan Ibrahimagic, filling in for the ill Alex Mumbru, confirmed Schroder’s frustration. “Such things have no place in sports or competition. We hope this will calm down and can be resolved somehow,” Ibrahimagic told reporters.

Despite the incident, Schroder, who plays for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, led all scorers with 26 points as the reigning world champions improved to 3-0 in group play.
