Guard Coby White is expected to make his Charlotte Hornets debut Tuesday night—and it will come on the hardwood he once called home. The former Chicago Bull will suit up at the United Center for the first time as a visitor after last week’s trade that sent him from Chicago to Charlotte.
White, who turned 26 last Monday, was the No. 7 pick in the 2019 draft and spent six-and-a-half seasons with the Bulls. He moved to the Hornets in a four-player, deadline-day deal that delivered two second-round selections to Chicago. Originally, Charlotte had offered three second-rounders, but a post-trade physical revealed a left calf strain that shortened the draft-pick haul by one. White has since recovered from that injury.
Despite being limited to 29 games this season because of calf issues, White has averaged 18.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 29.1 minutes, shooting 43.8 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from beyond the arc and 80.5 percent at the line.
The guard is on an expiring contract. He told reporters Tuesday that he declined an extension earlier in the season and anticipated a trade once reports surfaced that Chicago was dealing Kevin Huerter and Nikola Vucevic. “Things change,” White said, noting the Bulls’ inability to “stack wins consistently.”
Tuesday’s contest matches clubs headed in different directions. Chicago enters on a nine-game skid and is still seeking its first victory of the month, while Charlotte has rebounded from a 4-14 start to go 23-17 since, winning 11 of its past 14 outings.
